Dealing with a Foreign Object Stuck Between your Teeth or Gums

Getting something stuck between your teeth or in your gums can cause anxiety and even pain. Popcorn hulls, tough meat fibers, seeds and fruit peels are just a few examples of everyday things that can get stuck between your teeth. If you have a habit of chewing on hard objects like pens and pencils or you use your teeth as tools, a piece could break off and get stuck in your teeth.

If something like this happens, it’s important to stay calm. Avoid using things like toothpicks sharp pointed objects to remove an object from your mouth, as it could easily injure your gums.

Waxed floss is the first thing you should reach for. The waxy coating helps it slide between teeth and work around the foreign object. Be gentle when slipping the floss between your teeth or around the object. Avoid snapping it into place, as this can easily injure your gums.

If this still doesn’t get the object free you could try to rinse the area with a water jet or dental fountain. Sometimes the vigorous stream of water can loosen debris.
